Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages
The Family Records Centre
1 Middleton Street, London, EC1R 1UW
This service, provided by the Office for National Statistics and the Public Record Office, is the main facility for personal visitors, and can provide help and advice to family historians on the use of their extensive collection of genealogical records. Copies of certificates of birth, death and marriage may be purchased for any entry in the indexes, which date from 1837 and cover England and Wales (Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own record offices).
For full information on the facilities provided by the PRO, including details of how to obtain certificates if you cannot visit the FRC, see http://www.pro.gov.uk/genealogy/certificates.htm
See our registration page for more information on civil registration and where to find the records.
District Offices for East Kent
Please note: district offices are very busy and do not have the staff to cope with the demands of genealogists - wherever possible, requests for certificates should be made to the central office (see PRO website). Local offices no longer supply copies of certificates.

Lost an ancestor in WW1 or WW2?
- Find out about life in the trenches of World War 1 or download a picture from the WW1 collection at Swedish University
- Find out where and when your ancestors died and where they are buried at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website. By providing the surname (or part thereof - minimum required for search), initial, war or year in which they died, service and country of origin, you can obtain a list of matching names from the register with details of regiment and date of death. For any individual on this list you can obtain details of where and when they died and where they are buried, along with any other information that is available on the register. You can also print out a memorial certificate. Be prepared for a long loading time on this site, as the pages contain some fairly large pictures.
